Global Energy Storage Surpasses 100GW — Southeast Asia Identified as the Next Major Growth Frontier

The global energy storage industry has crossed a landmark threshold: for the first time in history, cumulative installed storage capacity has surpassed 100 gigawatts, according to a new analysis from BloombergNEF. This milestone — which would have seemed remote just a decade ago — reflects the dramatic acceleration of battery storage deployment driven by falling costs, increasingly supportive policy frameworks, and the structural requirements of high-penetration renewable energy grids.

BloombergNEF’s findings highlight three defining characteristics of the current market: the breadth of technologies now competing at utility scale, the increasing role of storage in providing grid services beyond simple energy shifting, and — critically for MESA members — the identification of emerging markets outside China as the next primary growth zone. Southeast Asia is explicitly called out as a region with the policy momentum, renewable ambition, and improving financing conditions needed to sustain rapid deployment growth through the end of the decade.

Malaysia stands at an advantageous inflection point within this global picture. With MyBeST delivering its first 1.6GWh of grid-scale storage, LSS6 mandating BESS integration, and neighbouring markets across the region scaling their own procurement programmes, the conditions for sustained industry growth are aligning. The question for Malaysian stakeholders is no longer whether storage will become central to the energy system — it already is — but how quickly the local ecosystem of developers, financiers, and technology partners can scale to capture the opportunity.
