Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA) has become home to Malaysia’s first integrated airport solar-plus-storage project, following the successful deployment of EVE Energy’s “Mr Big” battery storage system at one of Southeast Asia’s busiest aviation hubs. The project, which was witnessed at its signing stage by Malaysia’s Deputy Prime Minister Fadillah Yusof, marks EVE Energy’s formal entry into Malaysia’s critical infrastructure sector and signals a growing appetite for large-scale commercial BESS applications beyond the utility grid.

The system comprises a 10MW solar farm paired with a 36MWh battery energy storage system — EVE’s first AC/DC integrated storage deployment in Malaysia. It will operate across multiple use cases including peak demand shaving, renewable energy grid connection, and frequency regulation support, all within the demanding operational environment of a major international airport. The project is projected to reduce KLIA’s carbon emissions by approximately 42,000 tonnes annually once fully operational in 2027.

The KLIA deployment represents an important proof-of-concept for the commercial and industrial (C&I) BESS segment in Malaysia. Airports, data centres, and large industrial facilities share a common challenge — they require highly reliable power with increasingly stringent sustainability credentials. As more organisations pursue carbon reduction targets, projects like this demonstrate that solar-plus-storage is not only technically viable at scale, but commercially deployable within Malaysia’s existing regulatory framework.
